In a commercial building, the use of stair nosings or stair edgings is a legal requirement. There are various standards within the UK offering guidance, these are: Building Regulations Document K, Protecting from Falling; Building Regulations Document M, Access to and use of buildings; BS 8300-2:2018; BS 9266:2013; BS 5395-1:2010
While There is some variance between the documents the three main points to be aware of are:
Size Of Nosing – a visually contrasting nosing with dimensions of between 50-65mm on the tread and 30-55mm on the riser is needed.
LRV’s – The nosing must be of a distinct visual colour contrast to the floor covering. These colours are measures as an LRV, Light Reflective Value, and it is a requirement for the nosing and floor covering to be a minimum of 30 points difference.
Slip Resistance – The tread must provide a good slip resistance to reduce the risk of slips and falls. Commonly measured with a PTV , Pendulum test value, a PTV of greater than 36 is required in both wet and dry conditions.
An aluminium stair nosing is an angled trim or capping used on a steps edge to help with visibility and slip resistance in order to meet requirements such as building regulations. Aluminium Stair nosings come in a range of profile sizes and shapes, depending on regulation requirements and preference, and can cover the edge of a step or the steps full tread surface. They are also available as solid aluminium or with rebated channels to take various infills depending on the usage and foot traffic of the stair case. The infills used can consist of various materials such as metal, PVC, rubber, or Carborundum.
All of the stair nosings that quantick offer have been independently tested for their slip resistant values using the pendulum test method, with a result of extremely low potential for slip in wet and dry conditions.
A carborundum stair nosing is an aluminium capping or trim that is used on a steps edge, which contains an infill made up of a resin and aggregate mixture. This aggregate mixture includes abrasive minerals such as aluminium oxide, which helps create a very hard wearing surface and provide good levels of slip resistance.
In order to achieve the best result we would recommend that stair nosings are installed with both adhesive and mechanical fixings. Please allays refer to our appropriate fitting guide or contact us for advice.
We would recommend the use of our Multitread Rapid curing flexible adhesive on all of our nosings.
When measuring nosings we would recommend the steps be numbered from top to bottom including floors, flights and landings for a cutting and installation plan. We always recommend that accurate measurements are taken, as we would not recommend attempting to cut our carborundum filled nosings on site and we can manufacture to bespoke lengths free of charge.
